Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

ThinkBuddy is an AI learning companion for children. We take your family's privacy seriously and comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights as a parent or guardian.

1. Data We Collect from Children

  • Display name — chosen by the parent during account setup. Not a real name unless the parent chooses to use one.
  • Date of birth — used to calculate age and adjust learning difficulty and content appropriateness. Stored as a date; not shared with other users.
  • Chat messages — conversations between the child and AI learning buddies.
  • Uploaded images — photos or images shared in chat for learning purposes.
  • Username and password — for authentication. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text.

2. Data We Collect from Parents

  • Email address — for account authentication and important notifications.
  • Payment information — processed by our payment provider. We never see or store card numbers.

3. How We Use Data

  • Providing the AI learning chat experience
  • Adjusting content difficulty based on age
  • Allowing parents to review their child's conversations
  • Processing payments
  • Security and abuse prevention

We do not use children's data for advertising, behavioral profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the learning experience.

4. Data Storage and Security

  • All data is encrypted at rest and in transit (TLS)
  • Passwords are hashed using industry-standard algorithms
  • Children can only access their own data — parents can only access their own family's data
  • Child data is isolated by family — no cross-family data access is possible

5. AI Safety

ThinkBuddy uses AI to guide learning through questions — it is designed to never give children direct answers. Every AI interaction is:

  • Socratic by design — the AI asks questions to help children reason through problems, rather than providing answers to copy
  • Visible to parents — every conversation is available in the parent dashboard in full
  • Scoped to learning — AI interactions are restricted to educational topics configured by the parent
  • Not used for profiling — AI conversations are not used to build behavioral profiles, serve ads, or train third-party models

No AI system is perfect. We encourage parents to review conversations regularly through the dashboard and to contact us with any concerns.

6. Third-Party Services

  • Payment processing — handled by our payment provider (parents only). We never see or store card numbers.
  • AI processing — chat messages are sent to our AI infrastructure to generate learning responses. No personally identifying information is included in these requests beyond the conversation content itself. We do not permit our AI providers to use children's data for model training.
  • Hosting and infrastructure — we use industry-standard cloud providers for hosting, database, and file storage.

We do not share data with advertisers, data brokers, or any parties not listed above.

7. Data Retention

  • Data is retained while the account is active
  • Deleted accounts have their data removed within 30 days
  • Parents can request immediate deletion at any time

8. Parental Rights (COPPA)

As a parent or guardian, you have the right to:

  • Review — view all data collected about your child through the parent dashboard
  • Download — export your child's data
  • Delete — request deletion of your child's data and account
  • Revoke consent — withdraw consent at any time, which will disable your child's account
  • Refuse further collection — close your child's account to stop all data collection

9. No Tracking or Advertising

  • No advertising of any kind in the child interface
  • No behavioral tracking or analytics cookies
  • No social media integration
  • No gamification mechanics designed to maximize screen time
